Chapters 9-11 of Paul’s Letter to Romans are among the most complex theological chapters in all of the New Testament. They are also the most important for understanding Paul’s view of his own Jewish people, God’s unending love for Israel, and the apostle’s vision of harmony between Jews and Gentiles in Messiah. This course begins with an introduction to Paul’s own thinking and goals, including a look at the apostle’s relationship to the Torah, his apocalyptic worldview, and his approach to Jewish-Gentile fellowship. Following this overview of key concepts, students will take a step-by-step journey through Romans 9-11 in order to see how Paul addresses the question of God’s ultimate plan for Israel. The course will read Paul from the perspective of a first-century Jew whose theology flows from Jewish Scripture. As you study Romans 9-11, prepare to be surprised by things you may have never seen and by explanations that you may have not heard!
